The Philippines

Paul and Margie Varberg

Paul and Margie were both exposed to missions from an early age. Paul’s parents were church planting missionaries in the Philippines and Margie’s parents were involved in evangelism in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Paul and Margie have been working among the unreached Waray people of the Philippines for 37 years. They began by starting a multi-congregational church in the key Waray city of Tacloban as well as a campus ministry on some of the largest colleges and universities in the city.

In 2001, they started a Christian school (Bethel International School) with the goal of making it the best school in the entire Waray area so that it would attract prominent and influential Waray families to put their children in this school. This would give the school staff the opportunity to train up these future leaders of Waray society to be capable leaders with a worldwide perspective, a knowledge of God’s Word, and hopefully a faith in Jesus and a personal relationship with God.

Paul has also organized a translation team that has been working to make formal translation of the Bible using the vocabulary of Waray young people.  They have already published two editions of the New Testament and are working to complete the Old Testament.
